Nigerian soldiers dissent deployment to fight Boko Haram

Some Nigerian soldiers deployed to the North Eastern city of Marte in Borno State mutinied and shot into the air for hours. The soldiers refused to be deployed from Maiduguri, the state capital citing that after spending four years, they shouldn’t be redeployed to another battlefield to square it out with the insurgents.

Talking points: The Nigerian military has been embroiled in high-level corruption and the top brass have not been able to overturn the public perception of the institution. At the root of the mutiny lies the fact that the soldiers are battle-fatigued and are poorly remunerated.
