Trump wades into South Africa land expropriation debate

United States President, Donald Trump waded into the South Africa land expropriation debate a few hours ago on Twitter. He has directed his Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo to closely study the situation in South Africa focusing on land and farm seizures and the killing of “white farmers.”

The Government of South Africa responded almost immediately on Twitter that it outrightly rejects rhetorics and scenarios that remind them of their colonial past and that the land expropriation will follow a deliberate and inclusive approach that will not divide the nation.

“I have asked Secretary of State to closely study the South Africa land and farm seizures and expropriations and the large scale killing of farmers. “South African Government is now seizing land from white farmers.”

“South Africa totally rejects this narrow perception which only seeks to divide our nation and reminds us of our colonial past.

THE BIG PICTURE: South Africa’s parliament in February 2018 passed a law that allows for the expropriation of land without compensation. This move was met with outcries from certain quarters especially from the white landowners who are a minority in South Africa. The Africa National Congress (ANC) and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) did see to it that the motion was passed with 241 votes against 83 with a major opposition coming from the Democratic Alliance (DA).
