The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) says Nigeria’s population has hit a new zenith of 201 million. According to the 2019 world report, UNFPA says Nigeria’s growth rate has been at an average of 2.6 percent from 2010 to 2019.
According to the UN agency, Nigeria’s population grew from 54.7 million in 1969 to 105.4 million in 1994, then 201 million in 2019. The fertility rate among Nigerian women has dropped from 6.4 in 1969 to 5.3 in 2019; this means an average Nigerian woman gives birth to at least five children.
Currently, the contraceptive prevalence rate among Nigerian women is at an all-time low, 19% with reproductive rights between 2007 – 2018 averaging at 51%. This means that 49% still do not have the power to decide on their sexual and reproductive rights.
