John Dramani Mahama will be sworn in today for the third time as the President of Ghana as the West African nation faces its worst economic crisis in a generation.
Mahama, 65, will succeed current President Nana Akufo-Addo. Mahama served as Ghana’s president from July 2012 until January 2017. Following the death of President John Evans Atta Mills in July 2012, Mahama was sworn in as president for the first time. After serving the remainder of that term, he was elected in 2012.
Late last year, Mahama, the opposition leader who began his political career as the communications minister, won the presidency by promising to address unemployment, corruption, and the economic crisis.
During an economic-focused campaign, Mahama promised to “reset” the nation on several fronts, which mostly appealed to young Ghanaians who regarded the vote as a means of resolving the nation’s economic crisis.
